If we were to add Bouley Bakery to the list, which bakery would you want to see dropped from our Top 10 list?

The West Village is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city, and I can't go there without stopping by Magnolia Bakery. But I have to say that the cupcakes there are not the best I've had. Does anyone else think that they're a little bit on the dry side? However, the pastel confections are quite lovely to look at, and sitting on the bench outside on the tree-lined street surrounded by beautiful brownstones is a great way to enjoy a sunny day in the city.

In the Village, try Once Upon A Tart. I like their chocolate cupcakes, which take you back to starry visions of childhood. They're just-right in size -- can practically eat entire thing in one big, messy bite.
Levain Bakery on West 74th for incredible cookies -- one is plenty, belive it or not! And also pain au chocolat (if you're nice, they might warm it up so the chocolate gets melty...)
I must include Beard Papa Sweets Cafe on Broadway and 76th for cream puffs. The cold, delicious cream gets injected on the spot and the cute ladies finish the thing off with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. A must to eat right as you hit the sidewalk.
Also heavenly cheese straws (crisp, fragile, light, cheesy, pastry and addictive) from Sarabeth's (also at Dean & Delucca sometimes) |

I thought Bouley Bakery would have made the list. All the baked goods there are exceptional! Perhaps the best Quiche Lorraine in New York is found here.

The Upper West Side of Manhattan offers two of my favorite bakeries. The Silver Moon Bakery on Broadway and 105th Street with fabulous artisanal breads and a fantastic mandarine orange tart. Soutine on 70th Street and Columbus is a delightful hole in the wall where I buy ethereal apple turnovers and yummy birthday cakes!

The City Bakery is fantastic, but it's so much more than pastry. Where else can you find homemade marshmallows? And pay like 18 dollars a pound for the salad bar?
