I'd say Ilforno Pizza and Pasta. It's not just the food - it's the ambiance too.

I've tried 'em all. Biggest fan of Nick's on the UES via Forest Hills. Half red - half white. Simply the best.

How oh how can it be humanly possible to talk about amazing NYC pizza without talking about Joe's streetside shrine downtown at Bleeker and 6th? These are the slices that have fueled the dreams of the city's high and low for decades. No chairs, no table service, no checkered cloths - just amazing, consistent, transcendant slices of a pie that will make believers out of any sceptic and win accolades for sharing the info. Just as many limos sidle up at all hours as walk-ins - and I'm as much a fan of the coal-fired, mesquite-oven gourmet version as any. But Joe's is one of those incredibly rare priceless gems that just happens to be relatively inexpensive. Terribly thin crust that has a slightly charcoaly crispness, nicely burnt in just the right places..sauce that has NO hint of the dreaded sweetness Americans seem to actually like..and cheese that is the perfect marriage of cream and salt. Shake on the red pepper flakes and get ready to raise your eyebrows!

Two Boots Pizza--any and all locations--has pizza like no one else. I bring it as gifts!

Another favorite is Daniello's, 95th and Columbus, especially the European Pie. There's an east side location as well; never tried it.

went there the other night. Place just opened about a month ago. Ate the most unusual oval shaped pizza I ever had. Best crust, sauce and cheese. Very thin with a delcious crust. Definitely will go back. If you love good pizza, you should go. Very Happy

I'll definitely concur with ChocolateFrank, Otto's is totally, completely, 100% overrated. (Actually I think Babbo is too, but that's for another board.)

I'll also concur with avb212: Una Pizza Napolitano rocks. Absolutely the best pizza I've had outside Italy ... one great place for a quick slice on the run is Bleecker Street Pizza on Bleecker and 7th Ave. Their Nonna Maria, with fresh mozzarella and basil is mouth-wateringly scrumptious!

If you have three hours to kill and do not mind waiting one hour to get your pizza pie, then this Brooklyn outer borough pizzeria is a place for you. Dominic De Marco has been serving up made to order pies for decades, and he makes every pizza himself. The pizza is truly wonderful but you must have patience and are willing to overlook the lack of hygienic environment.

Two Boots is excellent, though I find their white pies--especially the Night Tripper--to be superior to the ones that they make with tomato sauce. Also, what about Cacio e Vino on Second Avenue and 5th? They make European-style pies and it's never crazed over there.

Oh yeah, Two Boots does rock the corn meal!

Also, Lombardi's is pretty sweet too--especially when you opt for the free garlic topping on your pie. Yum! I always take visiting friends and family here and no one has yet to be disappointed.

I have to concur with AVB212: una Pizza Napoletana is dangerously delicious. It's a little heavy on the price, but I've ever eaten better Naples-style 'za this side of the Atlantic. It's the real deal--and made by a guy from New Jersey, oddly enough.

I was excited about trying the pizza at Otto. I thought Mario would know how to make (and serve) authentic Italian pizza (as opposed to the thick-crusted, liberally topped pie one normally finds on these shores). Alas, I was disappointed. The pizza at Otto tasted like it just came out of the microwave. And it arrived already sliced, which one would never find in Italy. Conclusion: over-rated.

jj is right--pizza must be divided between the thin crust brick oven pizzas and street slices. For the former, I'd pick Una Pizza Napoletana, on 12th near First Avenue in the East Village. For doughy goodness, I'd choose Sal's on 6th and A (it recently moved there from 7th and A). Grimaldi's is great, but it truly excels as a place to bring out of towners. It's tough to brave the lines more than once in a great while.
